Years on your parent's policy count, and some providers reduce your first premium because of it with named driver insurance.

FAQ's
Questions we get asked all the time
Q1. If I drive without my supervisor and something happens — am I covered?
No: If you don't have an accompanying driver who has held a full licence for at least 2 years, your insurance cover is invalid. Your insurance policy is issued on the basis that you are accompanied. Drive without a supervisor and you are effectively uninsured.
Q2. I'm on my parent's policy as a named driver — does that count when I get my own insurance?
Yes — and this is where a lot of drivers leave money on the table. The years you spent as a named driver without claims can be credited by some of our providers. This reduces your first premium even if you have zero NCB in your own name. Always tell us how long you've been on a parent's policy, especially when applying for young driver insurance.
Q3. I just passed my test. How many penalty points can I get before I lose my licence?
Ans: As an N plate driver, 7 penalty points in your first two years and your licence is revoked — you go back to a learner permit. That is half the 12-point limit for experienced drivers. Even not displaying your N plate costs 2 points. Your first two years on the road matter more than any other for car insurance for new drivers.
Q4. I got a speeding fine — do I have to tell my insurer and will my premium go up?
Ans: you must tell your insurer. Failure to disclose can invalidate your policy. Different insurers treat minor penalty points very differently, some increase your premium significantly, others barely at all. This is exactly why having a broker matters when looking for the best car insurance for young drivers. We know which providers are most fair on this and route you accordingly.
Q5. I need insurance for my driving test — can I get it quickly?
Ans: From 9 March 2026, all driving test candidates must present a valid insurance certificate for the vehicle used in the test. If your name is not on an existing certificate, you need your own learner driver insurance. We offer same day cover, call us in the morning and your cert is with you before your test.
Q6. I've been on a learner permit for years and never got around to the test — will this affect my insurance?
Ans: It can. Some insurers load premiums for long-term learner permit holders looking for driving insurance Ireland. We have 8 providers; some are more flexible than others on this. Worth knowing from 1 November 2026, learner drivers who have held their permit for four years must sit their test before renewing. Now is the time to get sorted.
Q7. My N plate fell off — am I still insured if I get stopped?
Ans: Your insurance is still valid but not displaying your N plate is an offence carrying 2 penalty points on a fixed charge or 4 on conviction. Keep a spare set in the glove box. At 7 points you lose your licence, 2 points for a missing plate is not a risk worth taking.
